The Ecology of Hope: Communities Collaborate for Sustainability
Published in Paperback by New Society Pub (October, 1996)
Authors: Ted Bernard, Jora M. Young, and Wes Jackson
Average review score:

Offers encouragement and points to where we can go.
This wonderful book gives us hope -- if we are willing to pitch in and work with others. It gives examples of how people in very different communities have come together to overcome difficulties and make significant improvements to their environments. Menominee Indians are maintaining a sustainable timber forest in the midst of land that have been devastated by loggers, and suburban Chicagoans are restoring nearby prairie lands to their original condition. Based on the authors' experiences gained while visiting these groups, the last chapter provides very helpful practical suggestions of how people can effectively be organized to bring about positive change. This book, if taken seriously by enough people, can turn us in the right direction

A harbinger of an ecological renaissance.
I have read the book and heard Jora speak -- they are both incredibly inspiring. Sustainability is one of those terms that is often used in ecological circles -- Ted and Jora give concrete examples of its application in our society, and from those examples flow hope. I bought this book thinking that I would read two scientists' view of ecology. When I finished I realized that I had not only learned some science, I had also been persuaded by the authors appreciation of the spiritual basis of ecology. Wanted: Reformers not of others, but of self.

Effective Horsemanship (15519)
Published in Hardcover by Hotho & Co (June, 1986)
Author: N. Jackson
Average review score:

This is an excellent text!
This book is the best I have read for a comprehensive text on training and riding. Everything is explained clearly with wonderful diagrams. The details that are so important to understanding the purpose and use of a technique are spelled out, rather than glossed over. A philosophy of sound horsemanship pervades the book, I HOPE it gets reprinted so I can recommend it to students.

The best book on riding I have ever read. It is my Bible
This outstanding book gives a firm foundation in all branches of Equitation. It is a disaster for it to be out of print. I "loaned" my first copy and it was not returned. It took me 5 years and much research to find another. Publisher...PLEASE re-print it. It is a Classic.

I train Event Horses to top level (World Games Medalist, years ago) and also start off young horses for steeplechasing.

The contents of this book "Effective Horsemanship" are just that..exactly. It gave me a foundation. My teachers over the last 25 years have really only just guided my application of Noel Jackson's written word. Now it is a perfect refresher whenever I wish to "brush-up".

I really could not manage a horsey career without it!!

Elli: Coming of Age in the Holocaust

Author: Livia Bitton Jackson
Average review score:

Elli Review
This is a really good book, it really brings to mind things that no one could have made-up, its just way too horiffic, but it DOES open your eyes to what power one man can have, and how people follow the majority, not standing up for others.

Touching, Heart-breaking!
Just a few words, if you have not read this book go get it now! This is one of those books written from the heart, that cannot- but have you in tears, truely written from the heart; it stired my soul! A true story of a young girl overcoming nightmares that we would not dread to imagine, it has truely opened my eyes, to the horror, that so many people lived through, and so many not....Well done Livia! A book that will live for an eternity!

Embers in the House of Night
Published in Paperback by Consortium Book Sales & Dist (15 April, 1999)
Authors: Edward Kocbek, Sonja Kravanja, Richard Jackson, and Edvard Kocbek
Average review score:

Window To The Soul Of An Unknown Culture
In recent years, we have become familiar with televised pictures of a Europe that few Americans could place on a map. How lucky we are, then, that Sonja Kravanja has honored us with her masterful translations of the poet Edvard Kocbek, and thereby an introduction to the literature of her native Slovenia. Few translators have the ability to literally place the reader inside the thoughts of an author, yet this is what Kravenja has done. A rare and deeply emotional body of work, a window into the mind of a remarkable Eastern European poet.

Sonja Kravanja has chosen excellent Kocbek poems.
Kravanja's translation of Kocbek's poems is wonderful. Each poem is distinctive - full of insight and understanding. Most impressive, however, is how incredibly beautiful the poetry is.

Empire City
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 October, 2002)
Authors: Kenneth T. Jackson and David S. Dunbar
Average review score:

leaning into "empire city"
this book is a masterpiece for anyone on the search. if you are one of those lower east side hipsters who thinks theres no success like failure, but failure's no success at all, then this book is for you. it leans into the kernel, and asks the right questions from beginning to end. get ready to strap on your conceptual goggles and prepare for some authors intention. from joan didion's "goodbye to all that" to walt whitman's "crossing brooklyn ferry" this book keeps the faith all the way.

Empire City's Grand Review
Empire City is about NEW YORK CITY, the capital of the world. If you are trying to figure out what New York is all about, read this book! New Yorkers young and old will be capivated by this masterpiece of literature. David Dunbar and Kenneth Jackson deliver one of the books that should be put onto your coffee table in your living room or next to the Bible on your bedstand. Simply put: this books is the BIBLE OF NEW YORK. It is where New York began, ended, and is now. David Dunbar delves into the depths of the burgeoning New York streets, while Kenneth Jackson puts together the pieces of history that have MADE New York. The pieces that these two worldly authors have put together makes even Gotham's Caped Crusader, Batman, sit back in an easy chair and take the night off from crime fighting to read this book. To put it simply, BUY THIS BOOK! It's great. CITYterm is proud, and so is a certain coach Ditka.

The English Country House in Perspective
Published in Hardcover by Grove Press (June, 1990)
Authors: Gervase Jackson-Stops and Brian, Morter, Peter Delf
Average review score:

Buildings presented in 'cut-away views' like dollhouses.
Hardcover; 160 pages; 9.5" x 12.3"
Small map of Britain to locate buildings. Featuring Bodiam castle & 11 grand English country houses. All have beautiful color cutaway views, detailed floorplans of most levels of every house, and the history of the houses. This is refreshing because so often with other books I've read there are floorplans of only the first floor. This is one of very few books that contain enough content whereby a drafter could re-construct plans of the buildings.

Not all of the featured buildings have the following: some show landscape drawings; some show original renderings; some have photos of the interior; some have detailed drawings; some only have the artist's rendering of the homes.

Great value if price remains discounted.

Architectural Revelations!
The concept of a "Birds Eye View" of houses, was a revelation. That is why when I first saw this book, I bought it immediately!!! It features 12 of the richest houses in England, and gives you another view that in many ways is far more revealing. This Birds eye view shows us how the house fits the site; but it is much more than that. It shows the surrounding gardens and parks. Full of magnificent watercolors, this book gives the reader a lot of detailed information about not just the great architectural details, but how these people lived. Anyone who is interested in architecture or even landscape design will greatly benefit from having this book.

Entertainment and Politics: The Influence of Pop Culture on Young Adult Political Socialization (Politics, Media & Popular Culture, Vol. 6.)

Average review score:

He knows more than me!
Dr. David J. Jackson implodes our basic ideas about seperation of entertainment and politics. His mix of logical arguments with easy readin' anecdotes will make you sweat the future of this country more than any terrorist ever could.

A Remarkable Piece Of Work, To Be Certain.
Look out -- Professor Jackson has done it again! "Entertainment and Politics" is a tasty analysis that you won't put down until it is completely digested; rarely has entertainment been so political, or politics so entertaining.

Failure: The Womb of Success
Published in Hardcover by WinePress Publishing (February, 2000)
Authors: Compilation from 20 authors including Samuel R. Chand, David C. Cooper, Collette L. Gunby, Wiley, Jr. Jackson, Eddie L. Long, Woodrow, Ii Walker, and David Compilation from 20 authors including Samuel R. Chand
Average review score:

encouraging. funny too.
I met Samuel Chand after he spoke at a conference in Los Angeles, and bought his book right off the table. My wife and I had been struggling to plant a church in South Central Los Angeles, and at the time were stinging from several painful setbacks... could we have done anything to avert those disasters? 20-20 hindsight always accuses "Yes!". Chand's book helped us deal with our failure, pick up the pieces (those available to pick up at least) and continue on. Best thing about this book: it is not mere cheerleading or positive-thinking, but honest, bold approach to understanding and redeeming failure so that "all things [really do] work for the good of those who are called according to His purpose". Don't read it when things are going well. Read it when you are angry, despairing, or ready to give up.

No One Wants to Talk About It!
The Story Behind the Book

It was the first Monday in August 1985. Mondays can either be real good or real bad for pastors depending on the day before Monday-Sunday! Sunday is the day the self-worth and even the calling of the pastor are tested to its limits. An experienced pastor has counseled wisely, "Never resign on a Monday!" On this particular Monday, I walked up to a few pastor friends who were gathered in the parking lot of the Conference center. The annual denominational conference was about to begin. The typical Monday morning pastor's conversation was in full bloom. "So, how many did you have in church yesterday?" was the operating question. Now, we all know that that question is usually asked by pastors who had a "good" Sunday, and this is the way they can let others know how well they did. Actually, it is a very self-serving question. It is not about the questioned; it is about the questioner! The respondent, who usually had a "bad" Sunday responds by shuffling his feet, clearing his throat, and saying something like, "We've had a lot of sickness in our area and seems like so many people were out on vacation. . ." This one-upmanship in the parking lot that Monday morning got the best of me. So, as a junior member of the clergy, I timidly asked, "Do any of you have low Sundays? Do you ever get discouraged? Do you ever feel like giving up? Do you ever wonder if it's worth it?" As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew I had said the wrong thing! Why deal with reality when denial serves us so well? The book in your hands was born on that Monday morning in that parking lot. The accounts in the book finally answer the questions that were asked in the parking lot and remind us that failure is the womb of success. As you read this book, you will laugh and you will weep. You will shake your head in agreement as well as amazement. Failure is not a popular subject. Go to your nearest bookstore and look for the shelf marked FAILURE; that shelf does not exist! Everyone wants to talk about success (it sells), but we all know we fail at more things than we succeed at. So let's talk about it! This book will get you started.

Firehouse Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Outlet (November, 1986)
Author: Dorothy Jackson Kite
Average review score:

A fun book, with lots of great recipes
This wonderful cookbook has 150 recipes drawn from firehouses from all 50 states. It has everything from main courses, to side dishes, to desserts. My one complaint against this book is that is it organized by area, rather than course, but that's a very small complaint. In between, there are chapters on firefighting in America, firehouse cooks, and systems of cooking in firehouses.

Overall I thought that this was a fun book, with lots of great recipes. I really liked the Chicken and Dumplings from page 110 (of the 2001 hardbound edition), and the Coffee Cake from page 77. I highly recommend this wonderful cookbook!

150 Mouthwatering Recipes from All 50 States
This is "no frills" cooking at its best! If you're looking for regional, family recipes that are easy to prepare without compromising taste, this book is for you. All of the recipes were tested in the Better Homes & Gardens kitchen, and Kite cleverly gives us ingredient amounts for family-size or "firehouse" portions--no calculations needed while your hands are coated in flour. Recipes range from regional dishes like jambalya, enchiladas, chowder and spaghetti to meat loaf, banana pudding and one of my favorites, "Potato Dish from Truck Co. No. 2." This is not just a cookbook. As wife of a veteran fire training officer and firehouse chef, Kite weaves throughout, a brief history, quips and tales of firefighting and dedicates the book "to the honorable members of our society who keep watch over our lives and property every hour of every day--the firefighters."

Forgotten Tragedy: The Sinking of Hmt Rohna
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (December, 1996)
Author: Carlton Jackson
Average review score:

Enlightening and frightening, but it's about time
My dad is a survivor of the sinking of the ROHNA. He never talked about it, I think it was too overwhelming for him, and now he is attending reunions and talking, but before that all my sisters and I had was Carlton Jackson's book. It gave us the story he had difficulty telling us. I was overwhelmed and shocked at how lucky he was to be able to swim, and the hell he went through. He was even scheduled for KP on the day of the hit, so I'm glad he wasn't in the kitchen area. Thank you, Carlton, for the story, now if more people could find out on A&E or the History Channel before they are all gone, there are only about 230 men left and they are ages 77-80. Let's go people. These men were heroes! Thank you

Your book was terrific! Raymond Alvarado (survivor)
Carlton, I know you are on the mailing list for the Torch of Remembrance Mile Hi Salute quarterly newsletter. So you know that I let over 800 (42 in foreign countries) people (mailing list) know about your book. My plan is to get to know how to use the Internet because I want to send the quarterly newsletter out on it, under the HMT Rohna Web site. Is there such a Web site? Please contact me at peach2drew@aol.com if you can help me out on this. Thank you, Carlton for writing history ignored, the sinking of the HMT Rohna. The goal, for the Torch of Remembrance is to erect a National Memorial Monument in Denver, Colorado, to honor all the HMT Rohna victims and 236 survivors, of the almost 2,000 soldiers. We are meeting with Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell in two weeks to show him the design. He said he wanted to help us. Waiting for you response. Thanks again..
